Im alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch der PM-Community ist trotzdem meist nur vom "Project Management Body Of Knowledge" oder "PMBOK" die Rede, wenn eigentlich der "Guide to the ..." gemeint ist. Darüber hinaus ist "PMBOK" auch ein eingetragenes Warenzeichen des PMI, obwohl dieses nach eigenem Verständnis ja nur den "allgemein anerkannten" Teil desselben pflegt und in Buchform herausgibt.

Der aktuell gültige PMBOK Guide 5th edition definiert "Project Management Body of Knowledge" als:

"An inclusive term that describes the sum of knowledge within the profession of project management. … the body of knowledge rests with the practitioners and academics that apply and advance it. The complete project management body of knowledge includes proven traditional practices that are widely applied and innovative practices that are emerging in the profession. The body of knowledge includes both published and unpublished materials. This body of knowledge is constantly evolving. PMI’s PMBOK® Guide identifies a subset of the project management body of knowledge that is generally recognized as good practice." Das PMI ist vom American National Standards Institute (ANSI) als eine Standards Development Organization anerkannt. Der PMBOK(R) Guide ist damit zugleich American National Standard (ANSI/PMI 99-001-2000; ANSI/PMI 99-001-2004; ANSI/PMI 99-001-2008).
